DWTS - does that count as "competing in 2009?" LOL
at least the last post was on topic... the rest of you should be ashamed of just posting irrelevant stuff on a given thread topic (to pump up your total number of posts)...
but with DWTS - does that count as "competing in 2009?" LOL
DWTS can't take up too much time... I heard the host of the letter turning TV Game show (Pat Sajak) on Wheel of Fortune would tape a month of shows in like 3 days...
Pat Sajak interview
Here is an excerpt:
"Q – Do they change the audience after each show?
A – Well, not after each show. If we can do five shows, we’ll have one audience there for three, and then one audience for the remaining two. You couldn’t ask anyone to sit through five of those things. But, we have it down. The crew’s been there for a long time. So, it really is kind id a machine the way that we can crank them out. The only time we ever stop tape is if there is a technical problem involving the puzzle. If I just screw up which I do frequently, I just make a joke and move on. Even the days are not very long. Typically we go on camera about 2 o’clock in the afternoon and by 6:30 we’ve done five shows."
but I am guessing for DWTS since there is audience participation and the rest of us voting - they sort of have to do it once week per show -- so they can't like tape 3 week's worth of shows at once...

Yeah it goes out live so it's one show a week for about 10 weeks but at least it'll keep her in shape

Re: Shawn Not Competing in 2009
I think she's taking off 2009 because she's so far behind in training plus she's got DWTS and who knows what she's got after that because of it. Hopefully she'll be back in business by 2010??

Yeah 2010 seems a good bet but hopefully she'll get training by the end of the year

i don't think the taping of DWTS will take up much time. i think learning and practicing the routines will take up a lot of time though. remember shawn is a perfectionist

taking one day off like sets you back one week while in training
I seem to remember Shawn saying that if she took a day off training, Chow would say that would be like missing a week ... I think she said something like that on an interview with Ellen
So if she has taken off say 9-10 months since the Beijing Olympics in Aug 2008 (if DWTS lasts through May, else 9 months if she ends that in April) that would be like 10 x 4.333 weeks per month = 43.33 weeks x 7 days a week = missing like 303 days of training.
Using the formula she talked about on Ellen would mean she would have to train 303 x 1 week per day of missing training to get back in Olympic/competitive shape or 303 weeks , which divided by 52 weeks /year =
5.83 years.
So I don't think she could be ready for 2012 (maybe 2014.83 if the formula holds up ... but maybe once you miss 100 days a training, the "formula" shouldn't be used in a straight-line fashion
P.S. If she is off DWTS by April then that she would missing 9 months of training since Beijing, and the numbers work out to be:
9 months x 4.33 weeks per month = 38.9997 months , lets round to 39 weeks
39 weeks x 7 days = 273 days, and 273 days of missed training is like missing 273 weeks... so
273/52 weeks a year = 5.24 years - still missing 2012 Olympics ... maybe get to worlds in 2014.
Unless my numbers need to be adjusted for the fact she doesn't work out on Sunday - so subtract 1/7 of the number of days, hence week of training and the numbers work out to:
missing 10 months (not counting Sundays) = 6/7 of 303 days = 259.71 days rounded to 260 days, translating that into 260 weeks of missed training = 5 years even... she would be ready in mid 2014.
Now missing 9 months: 6/7 of 273 days = 234 days, translated into like missing 234 weeks of training, 234/52 = 4.5 years... so she could be ready (if she started on May 1, 2009, adding 4.5 years = Nov 2013.
Hmmm this straight-line formula seems to indicate Shawn would not be ready for the 2012 Olympics... that is why we need a more sophisticated formula I think (ROFL)

I see we have a maths wiz amongst us, you forgot to calculate natural talent and prior skills learnt into the equation though

Re: Shawn Not Competing in 2009
even with the match (which was amazing by the way) i think she could try to compete for london. i don't know if i'm right but maybe just maybe she meant skipping a day going to the gym during a training schedule (not really in one except exercising) would be like skipping a week. basically losing a constant rhythm of training would be bad. But remember....just my thought

I agree with you dallas....I think even after this lay off, if she wants to get back in the gym and train. She will be fine.
And I think that is what she will do. When this is all over, get in the gym and see if she still wants to do it then. After that she will make her decision.

you gotta add the fact that she grew too that equation also. it will change the way she does skills - like landing and such. i'm not sure if she will be able to do some of her bigger skills like she could when she was shorter. ive been told a few inches can really throw your skills off.

Probably true.
Though I'm sure other things growing would throw of her balance more....but yeah...i'm not going there.....

Are you also thinking about eating pizza dipped in ice cream, while drinking beer from one of those beer hats.....or is that just me?

I am now very afraid.....i'm not even going to tell you about my Michael Phelps speedo, cause that would just be too weird.
Now if Shawn does that she certainly won't be competing in 2009 (gotta keep this on topic )

growth spurt[s] affecting performance, relearn skills

I read an interview with Nastia Luikin - and the year she grew like 2-3 inches and was trying to recover from injuries - because she grew so much - she had to relearn how to do a lot of skills because she suddenly had a growth spurt...
I think I heard Shawn say she grew 2 inches since Beijing... (some report only 1 inch but if she is 4"11" now , she was 4' 9" during the Olympics... and the rest of you can do the math ) ... so Chow and Li will have their hands full after Shawn is done with DWTS.

I would not be surprised if she grew a couple more inches before she goes back to the gym.

Yeah her parents look pretty short and if she is working out again, albeit not to her old levels, I doubt she grows much more.
